Internet, Internet everywhere – Week 12

The Internet of Things (IOT) refers to when everyday objects are connected to the internet to increase their functionality. For example why get a doorbell that just makes a ringing sound when you can get a doorbell with motion sensors auto recording and can be answer from your phone anywhere:

The number of internet connected devices actually surpassed the number of humans way back in 2008, thats 10 years ago and is on track for 50 billion devices by 2020. These devices are small little changes that can seamlessly work together to provide you easy of use. For example i can simple say ‘hey siri turn on the living room lights’ and the living room lights turn on due to my hue light globes. Also yes if you’re wondering i do have a ring doorbell and it is great especially when everyone is away you can answer the door or just look and see who is at your door to check everything is all g.

What do you think of the IoT, do you buy in?

How to keep citizens safe online – Week 11

how to use your phone by the US government

The dark web is an anonymised internet by use of proxied connections to create untraceable anonymous communicate throughout the internet. This leads to all sorts of opportunity for good and bad to happen and has leads to things such as wiki-leaks and other not so good things like the fact Australia has the 2nd highest per capita rate of dark web drug dealers world wide.

now to my remediation this internet is untraceable and allows for people to go access things governments and other companies probably don’t want you looking if they hack or exploit there way into your system with no trace but as is the internet now have a copy of all your data. This leads to things such as finding that the us government despite promises to companies to report fund security flaws to be fixed kept list and ways to access secure files and devices through exploits that could be executed by anyone, they are not just government only keys.

the dark web is a large unknown to most people what do you know of it?

The original hacktivists – Week 10

Hope you just appreciated that….

This week my remediation shows the first form tool Hacktivists used on people phones systems that they were trying to disrupt. This is almost like the original DOS (Denial of Service) attack available. now days DDOS is more know about and easier to stop from happening. But there are many other non rudimentary tools used by hacker and hacktivists to raise awareness about issues and help stop those doing the wrong moral thing in the eyes of the collective moral conscience of the internet. Everything digital and encrypted is not truly untouchable as shown by the ‘unbreakable’ enigma machine and we all know how that went. while things like encryption drastically increase security they has to be a way to decrypt it so therefore it is not perfectly safe.

Digital resistance to those in control can be simple things such as using vpn to block all useful information about browsing from being provided to you ISP or quite serious and involve large scale organised hacks from groups such as anonymous.

The power of the individual within the collective – Week 9

The internet is a large collective of people who communicate in  a dialogical way. This means there is both receiving and transmission of information from every communication node/person. With the emergency of social media to organise this large collective the individual is able to harness the power of the collective which has huge impact :

The power of the collective can be harness generally then there is moral outrage at certain actions that have been seen. For example the dictatorship in Tunisia was exposed on wiki-leaks then facebook was the place people share this information and coordinated massive protests and shared the images to the world of the nonviolent protest that the government was misrepresenting till eventually the president stepped down and fled the country. This all started because one person whistle blew what was happening in Tunisia then harnessed the power of the collective through social media and the internet for change.

Speed and iteration – Week 8

Journalism is undertaking a drastic change as legacy media is confronted by the impact of the internet on journalism . In the past if you caught a picture or had information about the current news you would submit it to your local newspaper and they would publish to the public if it was “fit to print” as the NYT puts it. But now the citizen journalists do something else:

On the internet they are no longer just the source but they are the source of information which has a way to frame and present their journalistic findings to the world with a few clicks with no restriction or limitation or editors. The news comes out as people are experiencing things with no filter by media outlets and irate as people gather more information about a story then the internet puts the information together in vast iterations to form the news stories.

What is the place of legacy walled garden content in the future?

The great trade – Week 7

Comfort vs Freedom, Polish vs Progressing, Closed vs Open, IOS vs Android

In the current mobile climate of today you really have to core choices for the operating system of your phone IOS or Android. IOS is built in a walled garden solely controlled by apple from os all the way to hardware. Android is a free os provided by google in an open source format with most manufacturers redesigning some elements of the end user experience on the os phones from Samsung to Xiaomi to Razer al use it with their own modifications with vast customisability options available to the end user. But leads to a slightly less comfortable usage experience between android phones due to the same os on so many different hardware specs and type of phones  while IOS has specific version for every iPhone providing the the more polished finish.

Digital feudalism and the advantage of decentralisation -Week 6

The rise of the internet moved us from the feudal structure of a centralised network where one node controlled and communicated information to all other nodes. We moved to a system of decentralised nodes where all nodes are equal in both contribution and receiving from all other nodes. This means there is no one central node to be taken out that will destroy the network as illustrated below:

But this is being undermined by big data, EULA and IP rules that seek to limit the copy machine that is the internet. They try and create what can be referred to ass walled gardens where only there approved items exist. this is very similar to the original concept of a walled garden in networking as a network that can only communicate within itself but has the added fact that the network has a centralised controller mechanism.

Find your Niche -week 5

In the age of the internet and our ever increasing access to information and an attention economy. That is when economic value is gathered from views and holding peoples attention to generate revenue through advertisements and/or  sponsorships. You need to find your Niche to hold attention and add value to get your piece of the long tail:

As internet content providers seek to make money by capitalising on this long tail effect where the long tail of small quantity niches creates more monetary value then the top sellers. you need to find your niche and get your piece of this long tail profit. A common way we see this is shown through my remediation :

All of these content creators on youtube are not popular enough on their own to run a successful tv segment but can get anywhere from 20 k to 2million views each to support them financial in this new financial climate.

When the when doesn’t matter

Society moves towards liquid labour and free information accessible to all via the internet. This shift means it matter less and less when something is done for a company and it doesn’t need to be done on a 9 to 5 time frame in an office anymore. With our increasing ability to communicate effectively in real time over the internet and work from home to anywhere in the world is leading to what is call liquid labour. Liquid labour exists in the non space of the internet and the free information it provides.

This meme below i have created to explain this phenomenon:

How to be Professional

This meme capture the fact that 38% of people say they are more comfortable working from home and it leads to things like this which also links back to your online persona and how you present yourself on the internet being able to hugely distort reality. As i have discussed here: http://jaz.zguy.com/?p=185.

This brings into question the need for traditional jobs and highlights our shift to freelance and casual work.

Control vs the collective

The network society paradigm is the process of moving from a centralised to decentralised network in the way we communicate and gather information.

This process happened with the internet as shown below:

away with control

This is a process i have discussed in part before here:

http://jaz.zguy.com/?p=169http://jaz.zguy.com/?p=167

During this process the pre-establish controllers always try to grasp back for control. But when the internet is a machine for making more internet we live in a place where it is impossible for it to be combatted because there is no one controller on the internet. It is a network anyone can add to and take from both giving and receiving information.

The new distributed network means that information can iterate faster and progress quicker without the limitations of the controller applied. Memes are the perfect example of this because every second there are thousands of new meme iterations created and distributed across the network on the internet to everyone which would not be possible if there was only one controller.
